Places to discover

Many ways to
meet Varanasi.

From riverfront rituals to Buddhist heritage, these places offer a starting point for your time in the city.

Ganga Dwar, the gateway to Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi
01Temples & faith

Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kashi Vishwanath is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines and a spiritual centre of the city. Its golden spires and the Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor connect the temple experience with the sacred riverfront. The surrounding lanes offer a close encounter with the everyday traditions of old Kashi.

Plan your darshan in advance and check the temple's official visitor guidance before leaving the hotel.

Dashashwamedh Ghat on the Ganges in Varanasi
02The riverfront

Dashashwamedh Ghat

One of Varanasi's best-known riverfront landmarks, Dashashwamedh Ghat brings together pilgrims, boats, and the energy of the old city. It is especially associated with the evening Ganga Aarti, when lamps, bells, and prayers create an unforgettable riverside atmosphere. A daytime visit reveals a different, equally absorbing rhythm of life along the steps.

Arrive ahead of the evening aarti to find your bearings and a comfortable place to watch.

Morning prayer ceremony at Assi Ghat in Varanasi
03The riverfront

Assi Ghat

At the southern end of the city's celebrated riverfront, Assi Ghat offers space to pause and watch the Ganges. Early mornings bring gentle light and a slower pace, while the surrounding neighbourhood has cafés and places to sit between walks. It is a welcoming starting point for experiencing the ghats beyond the busiest central stretch.

Make time for a morning riverside walk, then explore the lanes and cafés nearby.

The Dhamek Stupa at Sarnath near Varanasi
04History & heritage

Sarnath

Sarnath is a major Buddhist pilgrimage destination associated with the Buddha's first teaching after enlightenment. The Dhamek Stupa, archaeological remains, and the nearby museum offer another perspective on the region's spiritual history. Its open grounds and historic monuments make a thoughtful contrast to the movement and intensity of the old city.

Set aside a separate part of your day for Sarnath, and confirm museum and monument access before travelling.

Ramnagar Fort on the bank of the Ganges near Varanasi
05History & heritage

Ramnagar Fort

Across the Ganges from the old city, the eighteenth-century Ramnagar Fort introduces visitors to Varanasi's royal heritage. Its river-facing walls, courtyards, and historic setting offer a different view of the city. The museum collections add context to the lives, tastes, and traditions associated with the former royal household.

Allow time for the journey across the river and check current fort and museum visiting arrangements.

The New Vishwanath Temple on the Banaras Hindu University campus
06Temples & faith

New Vishwanath Temple, BHU

Set within Banaras Hindu University, the New Vishwanath Temple is a distinctive landmark dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its tall spire and campus setting offer an experience quite different from the narrow lanes around Kashi Vishwanath. A visit can be combined with a gentle exploration of the university's tree-lined surroundings.

This is a different temple from Shri Kashi Vishwanath in the old city; use the BHU location when arranging transport.

The red Durga Kund Temple and its adjacent water tank in Varanasi
07Temples & faith

Durga Kund Temple

Recognisable by its red exterior and North Indian temple towers, Durga Kund is dedicated to Goddess Durga. The temple and its adjacent water tank form one of the city's familiar devotional landmarks. It is a rewarding addition to a southern Varanasi visit, alongside nearby temples and the wider Assi neighbourhood.

Combine your visit with nearby Tulsi Manas Mandir, allowing time to enjoy each place at its own pace.

The Ganges and Malviya Bridge viewed from Namo Ghat in Varanasi
08The riverfront

Namo Ghat

Namo Ghat offers a contemporary addition to Varanasi's riverfront, with open public spaces and distinctive folded-hands sculptures. It provides a fresh perspective on the Ganges and an interesting contrast to the older, densely built ghats. Come for an unhurried walk and a wider view of the riverfront.

Add it to a relaxed riverfront outing, and confirm current access arrangements locally.
